The Recall
In December 2023, Quaker Oats began recalling granola bars and cereals over potential salmonella contamination, and expanded the recall in January 2024 to cover more than 90 products. Salmonella is a serious foodborne pathogen, and a recall spanning that many formulations reaches a large number of pantries — the scale that makes a consumer class action viable.
Quaker set up a reimbursement process for recalled product alongside the recall itself.
The Settlement
A consolidated class action alleged Quaker sold the products without warning of the salmonella risk while presenting them as safe. It was resolved by a $6.75 million settlement covering consumers who bought a qualifying recalled product over a defined period, with claims reported to run through March 2025. Quaker denied wrongdoing but agreed to settle.
This is an economic-loss recovery — a refund-style claim that does not require the buyer to have become ill. Anyone actually sickened would have a separate individual claim.
What Consumers Should Know
Check recalled product against the lot list and discard it. For the settlement, eligibility and any remaining deadlines are set by the court-approved administrator — the only reliable place to verify a claim, not a third-party “sign up” site.
