What the Lawsuits Alleged
Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is a widely prescribed anticoagulant used to prevent strokes and clots. Lawsuits alleged it caused severe, uncontrollable internal bleeding and that, unlike older blood thinners such as warfarin, it had no readily available reversal agent for much of its early history — so a bleed could not be quickly stopped. Plaintiffs said Bayer and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) failed to adequately warn patients and doctors of the bleeding risk and the lack of an antidote.
The core theory was failure to warn about a serious, sometimes fatal, side effect.
The Settlement
In March 2019, Bayer and Janssen agreed to pay $775 million — split evenly — to resolve about 25,000 Xarelto lawsuits. Notably, the drugmakers had won all six bellwether test trials before settling, and did not admit liability. A settlement after winning the test cases is a reminder that companies sometimes resolve mass litigation to end the cost and uncertainty even from a position of strength.
The per-claim recovery in such a broad settlement is modest compared with a single winning verdict, which is the trade-off of mass resolution.
What Patients Should Know
This is legal-news coverage, not medical advice — anticoagulants prevent dangerous clots, and stopping one without medical guidance carries its own serious risk. The Xarelto litigation is largely resolved and not an open class action; anyone with a specific situation should consult qualified counsel.
