The Oil-Consumption Settlement

Volkswagen, Audi’s parent, agreed to settle claims that certain 2.0-liter Audi engines had a piston defect that caused excessive oil consumption — the kind of problem where an engine burns oil fast enough to risk damage between changes. The settlement, which received preliminary approval, covered a list of 2012–2014 models (A4, A5, A6, Q5) and certain TT and A3 years, offering warranty extensions and reimbursement for prior repairs.

Oil-consumption cases turn on whether the burn rate reflects a defect or normal operation, which is exactly what the manufacturer and owners dispute.

The Timing-Chain Settlement

A separate line of litigation concerned a defective timing-chain tensioner — a part whose failure can be catastrophic for an engine. A 2018 settlement provided coverage of up to $6,500 for engine repairs and $2,000 for timing-chain-system repairs for class members. In late 2025 a federal judge certified a class of Audi A4 and Q5 owners from model years 2008 through 2013, allowing that group’s claims to proceed together.

What Owners Should Check

The practical steps are the same for any vehicle-defect claim: confirm your model and year against the class definitions, keep every repair order showing you reported the problem and what was done, and note whether a remedy was attempted under warranty. Those documents are what establish eligibility and, in a settlement, your reimbursement.
