The Title and Registration Claims

Class actions allege that Carvana, the online used-car retailer, routinely fails to transfer vehicle titles and complete registrations on time, leaving buyers with cars they cannot legally register — and sometimes cannot insure properly. Plaintiffs describe waiting months while receiving one temporary tag after another, in some cases issued from states the buyer has no connection to.

The suits allege violations of state unfair-and-deceptive-practices laws, and one theory is that Carvana issued temporary tags it was not authorized to issue.

The State Actions

Beyond private class actions, multiple states have taken regulatory action against Carvana over title and registration problems, including fines and, in some places, temporary suspensions of its dealer license. That regulatory record gives the consumer claims a documented backdrop — the problems were not isolated complaints. Carvana has also faced a separate securities suit from investors.

These are allegations and regulatory findings; the private cases are still being litigated.

What Buyers Should Know

Anyone caught in a title delay should document every temporary tag, email and promised date, and check their state DMV rules on registration deadlines and dealer obligations. Those records are what support a consumer claim and, often, a complaint to the state regulator, which can be the faster route to a fix.
