The Hydrogen Fueling Crisis

The Consumer Protection Claims

Class action lawsuits allege Toyota violated California's consumer protection laws by marketing the Mirai as a practical, reliably fueled vehicle when Toyota knew the hydrogen infrastructure was insufficient to support the vehicle population being sold. The lawsuits seek: repurchase of vehicles at purchase price; damages for periods of vehicle non-usability; and other relief.

California's lemon law (Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act) and consumer protection statutes (CLRA, UCL) provide the legal framework. The claim is unusual in that the defect is not in the vehicle itself but in the infrastructure commitment Toyota allegedly made in its marketing.
