The Recall
In 2021 Peloton recalled its Tread+ and Tread treadmills — about 125,000 units — after the rear of the Tread+ was found to pull children, pets and objects underneath. The recall followed the death of a six-year-old child and dozens of injury reports ranging from broken bones to friction burns. Peloton initially resisted the regulator’s recall request before reversing course.
The hazard is a design one: the gap and belt at the rear of the machine could entrap a child, which is why safe placement and keeping children away from a running treadmill matter.
The $19 Million Penalty
The Consumer Product Safety Commission later imposed a $19 million civil penalty on Peloton — among the largest in the agency’s history — for failing to immediately report the entrapment hazard as the law requires and for distributing some recalled treadmills. That penalty is about the company’s reporting conduct, separate from any individual injury claim.
Individual families have also sued Peloton over children injured by the Tread+.
What Owners Should Know
Peloton offered remedies including a rear-guard repair for the Tread+. For anyone with an injury claim, the evidence is the specific machine, medical records and the recall record. The safety guidance is straightforward: keep children and pets away from a treadmill, running or not.
