The Recall
In May 2023, Peloton and the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of its original PL-01 bikes — more than two million sold from 2018 to 2023 — because the seat post could break unexpectedly during use, dropping the rider. Peloton had received at least 35 reports of seat posts breaking and 13 reports of injuries, including a broken wrist, cuts and bruises.
This recall of the original Bike is separate from Peloton’s earlier, more serious Tread+ treadmill recall — a different product and hazard.
The Class Action
A proposed class action followed the recall, seeking to represent riders nationwide who bought the affected bikes — on the theory that the bikes were sold with a latent defect and that the remedy (a replacement seat post) does not fully compensate for the problem. A separate investor lawsuit tied to the recall and Peloton’s stock drop was dismissed, though the court left room to refile.
The consumer case is about the product defect; the investor case was about disclosures to shareholders.
What Riders Should Know
Owners of an affected original Peloton Bike should stop using it until they install the free replacement seat post Peloton offers through the recall — the safety fix is the priority. Anyone injured by a broken seat post should keep the part, photos and medical records for an injury claim, which is separate from the class action.

Peloton Bike Recall Lawsuit: The Seat-Post Break Claims: Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most common questions about this case and your legal options.
Which Peloton bike was recalled?
The original PL-01 Peloton Bike, more than two million sold from 2018 to 2023, recalled in May 2023 because the seat post could break during use. Peloton offers a free replacement seat post.
Is this the same as the Peloton treadmill recall?
No. This is the original Bike's seat-post recall. The Tread+ treadmill recall was a separate, more serious matter involving a rear-entrapment hazard and a child's death.
What should I do if my seat post broke?
Stop using the bike, install the free recall replacement seat post, and if you were injured, keep the broken part, photos and medical records for a possible injury claim.
